Topic: How can we promote Chinese culture worldwide?
Questions for Reference :
1. Introduce briefly the treasures of Chinese culture?
2. What do you think are unique features of Chinese culture?
3. What is / are the most effective way(s) to promote Chinese culture worldwide.
Firstly, why shall we “promote” Chinese culture? Throughout the history Chinese culture did not need to “promote” themselves, but those who worship China will pled their obedience to us and learn from the essences of our culture.
I think the most important reason for the urgency of our promoting our culture is that Chinese culture ever since 20th century has been constantly suppressed. Starting from the opium war, then the May 4th movement, Cultural Revolution and reform and opening up, we have self-examined the deficiency of our own culture and tried to find solution to remedy the situation of being beaten down by the western advantage forces. But the period of meditation is simply too long, and the Chinese people have gone through historical stage of time namely from a Feudalism society to a Socialist society, the cultural gap is too big, too big for the people to leap through, many of which have fallen into the gap. The western things keep flourishing in China, under such circumstance, the young people grow up lacking kind of self confidence of their own culture and worship blindly everything foreign, modern and fashionable. But in addition, the West does not merely conquer us merely with their McDonalds, ABC or Hippies, but the Democracy, Freedom and Human Rights stemming from Renaissance.
If Chinese culture does yelling for a bigger impact on the world, we shall no longer focus on the objects of surface layer like McDonalds, ABC or Hippies, namely Chinese Cuisine, Chinese Characters or Acrobats, which happen to be the biggest impression that westerners get after their visit to China, but those who can reflect the Philosophy and Weltschauung of the Chinese people in depth as well as the new thoughts and new ideas that derive from the above mentioned. I’m afraid this object is not to be achieved through the construction of thousands of Confucian Academies according to the plan of our central government by 2010, neither several so-called “masterpieces of films” which circle around the eternal theme of Chinese culture – Acrobats, Kongfu and Clothes, nor big party or shows displaying Chinese cultural in foreign cities.
Culture is a special thing of a nation which develops evolves along with a nation, and this feature has determined the way that culture shall be promoted. It is not like military or political influence whose conquest is through enforcement and some kind of sales promotion so as to make others yield obedience to, but a gentle, unobtrusive and infusing process..
As a result we may raise ourselves a question: what is the essence of Chinese besides Kongfu? Paper Cutting, Chinese Characters, Acrobats, Clothes from Tang and Han dynasty shall not be the main contain of our culture, but vitality which enables our culture to be inherited through 5000 years, and the energy which helps China develop in such a fast speed. For example, how does Chinese way of preserving one’s heath look like? How does Chinese morals and ethic impact on the society? Why is the motto “Richness will not be inherited more than 3 generations” so important in Chinese big families? How do the philosophy “Cultivate the moral self regulate the family, maintain the state rightly and make all peaceful” and the alike coordinate the relationship between individuals and the country, and how does it influence on our history from ancient time till now? What is the source of the toughness of Chinese people?
If all these question can be answered and we Chinese can take the lead to demonstrate the above mentioned with their behavior as a live model, I do not think there is a need for us to do any “promotion” work. But unfortunately, we are behaving just the opposite of our own culture.
